OpenRouter is the best-known AI model gateway: one API key for hundreds of models. For a developer in Indonesia the question is usually not whether it is good, but how to pay for it and whether it ends up cheaper or more expensive.
This article compares NusaGate and OpenRouter as they are, including where OpenRouter comes out ahead. All prices come from each service’s public price list as of 6 November 2026.

Model prices per 1M tokens
OpenRouter adds no markup to provider prices, so the figures below are the prices on OpenRouter’s model list, converted at IDR 18,000 per dollar. NusaGate prices are what your balance is actually charged. Format: input / output.
| Model | NusaGate | OpenRouter | Cheaper on |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT 6.1 Sol | 10,000 / 60,000 | 36,000 / 180,000 | NusaGate |
| GPT 6 Luna | 600 / 3,000 | 1,800 / 9,000 | NusaGate |
| GLM 5.3 Flash | 1,100 / 3,000 | 2,700 / 9,000 | NusaGate |
| Qwen 3.8 Flash | 900 / 2,800 | 2,700 / 8,460 | NusaGate |
| DeepSeek V4 Pro | 4,000 / 12,000 | 16,092 / 32,184 | NusaGate |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash | 5,200 / 20,000 | 14,850 / 74,250 | NusaGate |
| DeepSeek V4.1 Flash | 1,300 / 4,000 | 918 / 10,206 | Input: OpenRouter, output: NusaGate |
| GLM 5.3 | 8,300 / 26,000 | 1,260 / 25,200 | OpenRouter |
| Kimi K3 | 17,000 / 89,000 | 3,456 / 288,000 | Input: OpenRouter, output: NusaGate |
So not every model is cheaper on NusaGate. GLM 5.3, and input on DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Kimi K3, cost less on OpenRouter. For the rest, especially on output, NusaGate is about a third of the OpenRouter price. All 19 models are on the models page.
Don’t forget the top-up fee
On OpenRouter every card purchase of credits carries a 5.5% fee with a $0.80 minimum. A $5 top-up costs $0.80, or 16%. Your card issuer may add a foreign transaction fee on top. On NusaGate, an IDR 10,000 QRIS top-up lands as IDR 10,000 of balance.
Example: a month of coding agent use on DeepSeek V4.1 Flash
Coding agents such as Claude Code or OpenCode resend the same context again and again, so most input is read from cache. Say a month is 24M cached input tokens, 6M fresh input tokens and 1.5M output tokens.
- NusaGate: 24 × 130 + 6 × 1,300 + 1.5 × 4,000 = IDR 16,920.
- OpenRouter: 24 × 324 + 6 × 918 + 1.5 × 10,206 = IDR 28,593, plus the card fee. On a top-up this small the $0.80 (IDR 14,400) minimum outweighs 5.5%, so say you top up $10 once and spread it over several months: the fee becomes 8%, and this month comes to about IDR 30,880. Topping up exactly one month’s usage instead, the minimum fee brings the total to about IDR 42,993.
Even though fresh input on DeepSeek V4.1 Flash is cheaper on OpenRouter, the total is higher because of its cache and output prices. Run the numbers on your own usage: an app that is almost all fresh input (document classification, say) can come out cheaper on OpenRouter.
Payments: where the difference is biggest
OpenRouter credits are bought in dollars with a credit card, AliPay or USDC. Many developers in Indonesia have no credit card, and local debit cards are often declined for dollar purchases.
NusaGate is paid in rupiah: QRIS (GoPay, OVO, DANA, ShopeePay, mobile banking), virtual account or e-wallet through Midtrans, from IDR 10,000. Balance arrives automatically once the payment is confirmed. If you already hold crypto, you can top up USDC on Solana from $2.
Where OpenRouter is better
- Model choice. More than 450 models, including free models and niche ones NusaGate does not offer.
- Input price on some models. GLM 5.3, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Kimi K3 are cheaper on input.
- Provider choice. One model can be served by several providers, and you can bring your own keys (BYOK).
Where NusaGate is better
- Pay in rupiah without a credit card, with no top-up fee and no exchange-rate spread.
- Lower output prices on almost every model in the table, and output is the most expensive part of a coding bill.
- Claude Code with DeepSeek, GLM or GPT. Both offer an Anthropic-format endpoint, but OpenRouter’s docs say its Claude Code setup is only guaranteed with Anthropic models. NusaGate is built for running non-Anthropic models in Claude Code: just set
ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.nusagate.com. - Coding Plan. Pay IDR 89,000 for IDR 250,000 of balance over 30 days, or IDR 40,000 for IDR 90,000 over 7 days. Details on the Coding Plan page.
- Cost of every request in rupiah on the dashboard, so you know exactly what you spent.
Switching from OpenRouter to NusaGate
Both use the OpenAI format, so change three things: the base URL, the API key, and the model name (no provider prefix).
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
api_key="nsk_...", # was: sk-or-...
base_url="https://api.nusagate.com/v1", # was: https://openrouter.ai/api/v1
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
model="deepseek-v4.1-flash", # was: deepseek/deepseek-v4.1-flash
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello!"}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)For coding agents, run npx @nusagate-gateway/helper. It configures Claude Code, OpenCode, Codex, Cline and other agents in one go and backs up your old config. The full guide is in the docs.
So which one?
- Pick NusaGate if you are in Indonesia, want to pay with QRIS or rupiah, use popular models such as GPT, GLM, DeepSeek, Qwen or Gemini, and your bill is mostly output or coding agents.
- Pick OpenRouter if you need a model outside NusaGate’s 19, want free models, already have a credit card, or your usage is almost all input on GLM 5.3 or Kimi K3.
You can also use both: different API keys, same code.
Frequently asked questions
Is NusaGate cheaper than OpenRouter?
For most models offered by both, yes, especially on output: GPT 6.1 Sol, GLM 5.3 Flash, Gemini 3.8 Flash and DeepSeek V4 Pro cost about a third of the OpenRouter price. Not for all of them: input on DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, GLM 5.3 and Kimi K3 is cheaper on OpenRouter. Check the table for the models you use.
Can I pay OpenRouter with QRIS or Indonesian rupiah?
No. OpenRouter credits are in US dollars and are bought with a credit card, AliPay or USDC. Card purchases carry a 5.5% fee (minimum $0.80) and crypto 5%. NusaGate takes QRIS, virtual accounts and e-wallets in rupiah with no top-up fee, or USDC on Solana from $2.
Which models are only on OpenRouter?
Many. OpenRouter lists more than 450 models from dozens of providers, including free ones. NusaGate deliberately offers 19 models (GPT, GLM, DeepSeek, Qwen, MiniMax, Gemini, Grok, Kimi) that see the most use in coding and apps. If you need a model outside that list, OpenRouter is the better fit.
Do I need to change my code to switch from OpenRouter?
Barely. Both use the OpenAI format. Change the base URL to https://api.nusagate.com/v1, swap the API key, and drop the provider prefix from the model name (deepseek/deepseek-v4.1-flash becomes deepseek-v4.1-flash).
Does it work with Claude Code?
Yes. NusaGate also exposes an Anthropic-format endpoint (/v1/messages), so Claude Code only needs ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.nusagate.com. Running npx @nusagate-gateway/helper configures Claude Code, OpenCode, Codex, Cline and other agents in one go.
Does NusaGate balance expire, and can it be refunded?
Pay-as-you-go balance never expires. It cannot be refunded either, so top up what you need, from IDR 10,000. Coding Plan balance is different: it lasts 7 or 30 days depending on the plan.
